Workflow Overview
Design FMEA follows the System FMEA in the V-Model decomposition hierarchy. Each component DFMEA documents how design characteristics might fail and what controls prevent or detect those failures.

Design FMEA focuses on:- Component-level failure modes derived from subsystem failures
- Design characteristics that prevent or mitigate component failures
- RPN scoring (Severity × Occurrence × Detection) both pre- and post-mitigation
- Traceability to design requirements and test cases
- Create a DFMEA document for each component
- Identify design failure modes from the subsystem SFMEA
- Link design characteristics to failure modes
- Score RPN using the 9-view workflow
- Define design controls and verifications
- Update post-mitigation RPN after controls are implemented
